Remembering Marija Gimbutas

Marija Gimbutas was born on January 23, 1921 and passed on February 2, 1994. She was an was an archeologist who incorporated linguistics and mythology. In her work she developed the Kurgan hypothesis which stated that a peaceful gynocentric (matriarchal) society was, in the Bronze Age, replaced by an androcratic (patriarchal) society. In her view the the gynocentric societies were peaceful, respected homosexuals, and were egalitarian.

Gimbutas' books, particularly The Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe: Myths and Cult Images (1974); The Language of the Goddess (1989), and The Civilization of the Goddess: The World of Old Europe (1991), were really important in defining much of what is today modern Goddess belief and built upon speculation that Neolithic Goddess cultures had superior social structures. She also defined a "Great Goddess" of which many other focused goddesses, such as river goddesses, snake goddesses, etc., were manifestations of.

In the 70's, I became read (The Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe) and found it extremely interesting - eye opening even. She helped me understand the ramifications of Goddess worship from a social viewpoint. My understanding of how the various gods and goddesses can be viewed as manifestations of a single god and goddess was clarified by her writings. Although I continue to be a true polytheist, I understand the pantheistic view of deity because of Gimbutas.

Of course, several of her books are in my library. Her vision of "The Goddess" has given me an understanding of goddess worship and the implications of the social impact of such worship.

 Today, on the 91st anniversary of her birth, I remember Marija Gimbutas and give thanks to her as an Ancestor.

Remembering Doreen Valiente

Doreen Edith Dominy Valiente was born on 4 January 1922 and passed 1 September 1999. She was interested in magic from an early age and studied occult. When she was 30, she met Gerald Gardner and was initiated into his coven the following year. She went on to become his High Priestess, split from him, and became the High Priestess of several other covens -- some that she formed. She went on to write several important books including An ABC of Witchcraft, Natural Magic, and much later, The Rebirth of Witchcraft.

 During the mid 1970’s I was investigating various religious paths. Doreen’s book, An ABC of Witchcraft was one of the first books I read regarding Witchcraft. Her approach made more sense to me than Steward Farrar’s What Witches Do. I thought her approach was more in tune with Nature than some of the other materials I read at the time. (She may have been influenced by Robert Cochrane.)

She had a very positive approach to relationships with coven members and with the outside world in general. It was a refreshing approach to Witchcraft and was the closest thing I had found to my beliefs and expectations before I found modern Druidism.

Of course, we still have her books in my library. (Many of them are now out of print.) Her vision of Witchcraft gave me a much broader vocabulary of modern Witchcraft (Wicca) and an understanding of what it should be about. She provided a clear perspective of the Craft as a positive, life affirming, religion that was important for me to understand at a time when "Witchcraft" conjured visions of Satanic Rituals.

 Today, on the 89th anniversary of her birth, I remember Doreen Valiente and give thanks to her as an Ancestor.

Remembering J. R. R. Tolkien

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on 3 January 1892 and passed 2 September 1973. A university professor at Oxford, he is particularly noted for his fantasy works, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Ringstrilogy.

The Hobbit was probably the first full-length novel I ever read. Certainly, I read it as a preteen and it is the first "real" book I can recall reading. I read The Lord of the Rings trilogy sometime in my teens and, of course, have seen all of the movies - several times. His detail of the Middle Earth helped give me a desire to understand the historical places that gave inspiration to his world.

Although not a direct influence upon my spiritual life, Tolkien's books helped to pave the way to my accepting alternative worlds and alternative world views.

I know that I still have copies of his books in my library that have made the move across the country and back again as his books have always been important to me. Although far down on my "I'd like to read again" list, his writings will always hold an important place in my heart.

Today, on the 120th anniversary of his birth, I remember J. R. R. Tolkien and give thanks to him as an Ancestor.

Remembering Sir James Frazer

Sir James Frazer was born on 1 January 1854 -5/7/1941) and passed 7 May 1941. A social anthropologist, he is particularly noted for his work, The Golden Bough, which is now available (abbreviated form) at no charge on the Kindle Kindle and in an illustrated edition. Frazer's approach to religion focused upon what people did rather than theology. I have always wanted the 12 volume complete set, but have only encountered the abridged edition. I read his material first in the early '70's and was blown away. It opened my eyes to all of the similarities in religion. His material was among the first to have me understand how much of the Christ myth was a duplication of other, more ancient myths (virgin birth, resurrection, etc.). His work expanded my understanding that many religions share similar stories. The Golden Bough was probably the most eye-opening book I ever found any many later books, such as the Silver Bough, built upon my learning. Definitely on my "needs to be read again" list and on a special "I'd love to get the entire 12 volume set" list.

Today, on the 156th anniversary of his birth, I remember Sir James George Frazer and give thanks to him as an Ancestor.

OBOD Druids in Mass. Celebrate Winter Solstice

Very nice article about the OBOD Druids of the Mystic River Grove in Massachusetts who celebrated the Winter Solstice with an evening bonfire ritual. Photos at http://bit.ly/tnhBfy
They met at "The Peace Abbey" which is an interesting looking organization. Although they are moving, for members in the Boston Metro area, it may be good to look at their site for potential activities in the future. They have a Bed & Breakfast as well as conference spaces for rent. They also have a Pacifist Living History Museum and a Quaker room. It looks like a place it would be nice to have an Keltria Gathering and/or Annual Meeting.

Remembering Carlos Castañeda

Carlos Castañeda was born 25 December 1925 and passed 27 April 1998. Although an anthropologist, he is particularly noted as an author. In 1968 his published The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge. Certainly, Carlos Castañeda was an important author in the late 1960's and early 1970's. His work helped expand the ideas of Native American Shamanism (Yaqui) and Toltec wisdom. I read his book when it first came out and found it both confusing and enlightening. I was still a teenager and the book was beyond my comprehension. However, it did expand my understanding of alternative beliefs and practices and is thus provided an important step along my path in Druidism. Today, on the 86th anniversary of his birth, I remember Carlos Castañeda and give thanks to him as an Ancestor.

I ran into a "will be opening" Druid store in Columbus, Ohio. The Magical Druid. They already have some interesting Druid specific items on their website. Of particular interest was a bundle of the nine sacred woods for a need fire. Of course, it is better to collect the woods yourself, but if time or location keep you from it a purchased bundle would be a great resource. They also have a Ogham Set made of aspen that look very nice. Anyway, I wish them success in their new enterprise.

Children's Story about Mistletoe

I was very excited when I first saw a children's story about a Druid collecting mistletoe in a magickal way. I forgave the notion that the mistletoe was being collected during the full moon for the sake of literary convention. Then the mistletoe falls to the ground and felt a sadness, for mistletoe is too sacred to be allowed to touch the ground. I then began thinking about children who hear the story and learn its lessons will also carry incorrect bits of knowledge about mistletoe. Will the children later argue with their parents in the same way that children argue saying their teacher told them so. Of course, their teacher (or storyteller) always knows more than their parents - or so kids think.

It is a good story, told with feeling and compassion but could be made better by including known facts. Mistletoe was collected on the sixth night of the moon and was caught in a white cloth never to touch the ground.

I see in an article in the Chicago Tribune that Circle Sanctuary now has full body burials at their cemetery area. I am so pleased. I have been a proponent of natural burial for a very long time. If I were to pass in Wisconsin, it would be my desire to have a full body burial at Circle Sanctuary. This is great news and evidence that Circle Sanctuary is continuing to lead the way in Pagan ways.

I received a notification about the a new Galician Druid organization that look like kindred folk. The majority of their site is in Portuguese but they do have some English content as well. From their website, they pay attention to historical accuracy and documented evidences, yet, adapt Druidism to the contemporary world and make it relevant to followers today. Paris exhibition debunks Asterix history

I've seen a number of articles about the ‘Les Gaulois’ exhibition at Paris’ Cite des Sciences which proports to debunk much about Asterix and Obelix. Come on. They are cartoon characters. It is like saying Pepé Le Pew doesn't act like a real skunk. Of course Asterix and Obelix are fictional and do not represent historical Gauls and Druids.

The article about the exhibition goes on to say that the Gaul.
Lived in towns and villages (rather than in the woods).
Did not wear winged helmets.
Did not play with Dolmens.
Used polished bronze sickles rather than gold sickles

I don't think any of the "debunking" would surprise a modern day Druid. I also think the exhibitors are doing a disservice to the French to imply that they believe the historical Gauls and Druids did the things that the cartoon characters do. See

I learned about a very interesting article by Surendra Mathur regarding his pilgrimage to the Celtic Sacred sites in Ireland and the British Isles. Surendra is a Hindu, residing in India and is exploring the similarities between Hinduism and Druidism. Interesting material relating Lugh and Indra. Definitely, a good read.

I noticed that Inner Traditions has published a new book, Thomas Berry, Dreamer of the Earth, The Spiritual Ecology of the Father of Environmentalism. The book contains 10 essays edited by Nobel prize nominee Ervin Laszlo and professor Allan Combs. With so many Druids interested in eco-spirituality it should be a must for the Druid bookshelf. The reviews I've seen have all been positive, but I would love to see a review for a Neopagan Druid perspective.

Save England's ancient forests

The Woodland Trust is having a campaign to try to save England's ancient forests. The concern revolves around two issues, the Forestry Commission transferring ownership from the government (public trust) to private ownership and the practice of populating the ancient broadleaf woods with conifers which change the ecology of the woods significantly. Currently the plans only affect England and not Scotland, Wales, nor Northern Ireland. They have a petition to sign (only requests you email address), membership in the Trust, a shop, and of course they take donations.

Norma to play in Kansas City

I noticed that Bellini's opera Norma is playing at the Lyric Theater in Kansas City. (http://www.kansascity.com is reporting.)

If you don't know the story line, it is a story about a Druid high priestess who loves a Roman proconsul. She has two children by him. He grows tired of her and goes after a young temple virgin. What is a Druidess to do? The story is about her responses and is a tragic story of love and betrayal. The opera is it is regarded as the supreme height of the bel canto (beautiful singing) tradition and is considered an very diffcult lead for a soprano due to the range of both voice and emotion that must be sung. I've never seen it but am looking for it to come to a place nearby some day. The folks in Kansas City are lucky. I see that Cherry Hill Seminary will be hosting a Pre-PantheaCon seminar that looks to be particularly interesting, "Folklore, Culture & Authenticity in modern Paganism." I certainly wish I were in California in February. If I were, I'd attend; it looks really interesting. If any of you do attend, let me know how it went. See Winter Conference 2011 for details. The Day-long conference will be held February 17, 2011, the day before PantheaCon, at the DoubleTree Hilton, 2050 Gateway Place, San Jose, California. I wish I could be there.

There has been a lot of news reports about the Druid Network receiving recognition by the Charity Commission in the UK. The Lancashire Telegraph is reporting that Phil Ryder, of Richmond Terrace, led the campaign. Phil is the Druid Network trustees chairman. After a four-year fight, the Charity Commission recognised Druidry(sic) as a religion which qualifies it tax breaks. As a 501(c)(3) organization in the US, we understand the importance of such recognition. Most Americans don't understand how different it is in a country with an established religion and that religious diversity is new there. Thank you Phil. Your victory there paves the way for others to follow both in the UK and in other countries.

I found it interesting that Phil mentioned some of the places Druids in Lancashire meet and worship. Popular spots Sunnyhurst Woods, in Darwen, and Pendle Hill. I hope to get an invite when I visit the UK.

Interesting Article about Robin Gibb gives Druid connection

Ran into an interesting article regarding Bee Gee Robin Gibb. His wife of 26 years, Dwina Gibb, is a Druid. According to the article she was ordained as a Druid Patroness at Summer Solstice in 1992 at Primrose Hill in North London. A very Nice Photo is included with, what appears to be, Philip Shallcross in the background.

I'm looking forward to seeing Dwina's new project, an illustrated mythical storybook called Starchild.

California Prison Pagan Recognition Lawsuit

For those of you who don't know, Rev. Patrick McCollum is engaged in litigation (McCollum, et al. v. CDCR, et al., C 04-03339 CRB) challenging
the California Department of Corrections' "Five Faiths" policy which recognizes only five major world religions for inclusion in California's prison chaplaincy program.

The Atlantic had a really odd posting that was apparently meant to be a joke, but wasn't funny. Jeffrey Goldberg indicated that President Obama is a "Reform [sic] Druid" which means he "only worships shrubbery." I don't get it. At least Mr. Goldberg capitalized "Druid." See the entire bit at:

National Geographic ran a photo series of Solstice photos. Stunning images included the ever photogenic Arthur Pendragon conducting a sunset service near Stonehenge, Slavic Neopagans gathered in a Russian forest, and Bolivian Indians welcoming the return of the sun (Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere).
Definitely worth seeing. Some of the images will end up with my other "wallpaper" images.

Cornish Druid lifts curse on Engl

The Cornish Guardian reported that a Cornish Druid, Ed Prynn, lifted a curse on England's World Cup soccer team which was put on them by an African witch doctor. I don't condone asking the gods to be involved in sports activities, but lifting a curse put on by someone else is okay. Thanks Ed.

Certainly, I received more emails from folks pointing me to this article about Druid Ilmar Tessmann than I have received about any other news article in recent years. It is a very interesting article about how he "tunes into the energy waves and apparently helps to reduce the number of fatalities at an accident blackspot." I'm not sure that the photo nor the photo caption has much to to with the story, but, it is clear he's doing something. He is apparently burying plastic slates with magnets to neutralize radiation from a cell tower and then reduce traffic accidents. He has no explanation about why it works, but shows a statistical improvement over the past years. Great article and positive press for Druids. Well done Ilmar and keep up the work.

Wyoming prison supports volunteer faith-based organizations, including Druid

The Star-Herald (Scottsbluff, Nebraska) reported that the new Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution
(Torrington, WY.) is teaming up with its host community in more ways
than one. The article indicates that, "Among the many religions and volunteer faith-based organizations
represented are American Indian, Baptist, Catholic, Islamic/Muslim,
Jewish, Mennonite and Wiccan/Druid. A sweat lodge is also under
construction."

It is always wonderful to see alternate religions included with mainstream religions in the prison systems. So often Druids and other alternative practitioners are disenfranchised. I'll be interested to see or hear how the Wiccan/Druid practitioners do at WMCI.

Religious Tolerance is a Symbod of Civilization

The Times (London) has an interesting article regarding Witchcraft, Druidism, and Paganism where in they indicate that the sign of a civilized society is its tolerance and acceptance of alternative religions. They say, in part, "Today the wheel has turned full circle... it is a mark of civilised society that those who follow these beliefs are accorded the same rights as those who follow mainstream faiths."

The article also mentions that the "Pagan Federation — set up in 1971 — is gaining influence and has become

main liaison body between pagan ministers and hospitals, prisons and

authorities." Besides, the Pagan Federation noted there, there is also a Pagan Federation International.

Two Druid Circles in Golden Gate Park

Melissa Griffin reports that the circles in are back in business -- two of them in Golden Gate Park (San Francisco). One is near the western boundary of the AIDS memorial grove, the other is west of the Japanese Tea Garden. I don't believe either group is Keltrian, but, I'd be interested in finding out more about them. Who they are, who is leading them, etc.

Melissa go on to indicate that the park landscape architect was looking for rocks to finish up a Rhododendron Dell renovation. Near the AIDS memorial grove, he found a series of beautiful, hand-carved limestone rocks and began moving them to his project. (He works for the City and they are City property, after all.) What he didn’t know was that he was dismantling a Druid circle. The Druids were, according to Melissa, upset and "demanded" their religious rocks back. The Parks Department arranged for their safe return and all is well again.

I read about a group that broke away from ADF mainly for this reason- the Henge of Keltria. I looked into this group, but was disappointed to find that in creating their form of Druidism, they changed too many things from the way they were done in their parent group. For instance, they made ritual even more elaborate than ADF’s– my tendency is toward KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid). More steps were added to the rituals, and an elaborate system of ritual tools was created. They also made the groups initiatory and closed instead of public and open.

Certainly, the construction of ritual space is a little bit more complex than I recall ADF rituals being, but there isn't much more involved with the rest of the ritual. There are many things in Keltrian Ritual that are optional and, of course, the tools is one of them. Ritual tools in Keltrian Ritual are trappings and are not necessary to accomplish the goal. We often recommend that if you don't have, or can't use a sickle that a cupped hand can be used just as well.

Yes, Keltrian Druidism is initiatory. That said, the vast majority of the rituals are public or semi-public. I use the term public, because some groups can and do rituals where anyone can show up, but the majority of groves hold ritual in privately owned spaces, usually someone's home, where an invite is expected or the individual comes with someone who is known. I personally try to keep the "creep-o's" out of my home and I would never invite a "creep-o" to someone else's home that I wanted to be invited back to. The "Great Eight" Feasts and the Mistletoe Rite are open. Only the Vervain Rite is initiates only. The reason it is closed is that it is a magic working ritual. In working magic it is important for the group to develop group mind and work in unison as well as working with trust. It is difficult to trust someone you have little to no knowledge of and the initiation process provides a framework to garner trust from the other participants. It is also difficult to establish group mind unless the group has worked together on many occasions in a non-magickal way.

There are many reasons to learn a Celtic language. Certainly, it is difficult to achieve a cultural worldview unless you can think in the language of the culture. I applaud any efforts to increase awareness of Celtic languages and promotion of their revival. Gary reports on the Celtic Myth Pod Show site that a Cardiff couple boost the Breton language.

The articles says in part, "There are about 540,000 speakers of this Celtic language and a Welsh couple are helping to revive it."

"Richard Thorpe and his Breton partner Dr Jacqueline Gibson both speak Welsh and Breton and have been active raising links between Wales and Brittany since moving to France 18 months ago. More than 700 people recently took part in a sponsored run in Brittany in aid of Breton-language schools. The course began in Nantes and ran west via Lannion, which has been twinned since 1991 with Caerphilly. It finished in Carhaix-Plougher in central Brittany."

New findings at Stanton Drew

The Bristol News is reporting that new evidence is indicating that the neolithic stone circle near Stanton Drew, is older than previously thought and has an associated barrow. A great article about a place I don't know a lot about. I definitely will add it to my places to visit when I next go to the UK.

Congratulations to the people of Ireland. Religious tolerance seems to be growing. "Irish Central" is reporting that Pagan weddings [are] now allowed in Ireland. They say, in part, "Pagan weddings, in many cases performed by a recognized druid, will now be allowed in Ireland. Following a five-year campaign the Irish state has now recognized the right of the Pagan Federation Ireland to perform weddings."

Well done to Ray Sweeney, the Pagan Federation, and all the others who worked to get this important recognition.

The Philly Burbs ran an article "Pagan vets urged to come out of the closet". Of course, we have long supported the establishment of the penticle as a symbol of faith for many, we also promote the establishment of the awen as a symbol of faith for Druids on veteran's headstones.

They [Asatru wizards and spirit shaman, Wiccan witches and Druid priests] want respect equal to any Christian, Jew or Muslim who served in the armed forces, said the commander of the Pagan Veterans of the United States.

The article indicates that Charles Arnold is national commander of the Pagan Veterans of the United States. I did some looking and the website link mentioned in the article doesn't work. It appears that the organization is still mostly a Yahoo Group -- Pagan-Veterans-USA. That said, Charles has been long involved with Pagan Veteran issues and was the National Coordinator for the Pagan Veterans Headstone Campaign.

Goddess Senua Found

We are still learning about the gods and goddesses. Using one of the plaques from the finding, the British Museum finally ascribed a name to a goddess figure found in 2002 -- Senuna (aka Senua). She is probably a local spring goddess who was adopted by the Romans in much the same way that Sulis was adopted at Bath.

There was an interesting article on Recordnet.com regarding a former member of the Henge. "When belief means a battle" is about "Prisoners whose faith falls outside the mainstream say the walk toward equality continues to be uphill."

The article begins with Morgan Kane , who was a member of the Henge of Keltria in the early 1990's and again until 2004. and describes some of his problems in being able to practice Druidism in the California prison system.

The article highlights many of the difficulties that Druids have in the system. The Henge has supported Morgan in his endeavors to worship the Gods and Goddesses as he wishes.

Upcoming Books

I received the latest Inner Traditions/Bear & Company catalog. Nothing directed specifically to Druids or Celtophiles, however, there were a few offerings that were of interest to me.

The Temple of High Magic: Hermetic Initiations in the Western Mystery Tradition which proclaims to be a practical guide to pathwork and other esoteric techniques from the ancient mystery schools predating Christianity. It is to be released in February 2010 and may be of interest to those on the Druid Path.

Also of interest is Shamanic Breathwork: Journeying beyond the Limits of Self which promises to help you utilize the healing power of breath to change consciousness. It includes a 60-minute CD of chakra-attuned rhythms to play during the journey. Could be good and certainly has the potential to assist in technique. To be released in December 2009.

Finally, The Return of the Dead: Ghosts, Ancestors, and the Tranparent Veil of the Pagan Mind interests me a lot. It promises to demonstrate how Medieval Christanity transformed the more corporeal ghost encountered in pagan cultures with the disembodied forms known today. Certainly I understand how the returning dead were once viewed as troublemakers, but I'll be interested in seeing how they were viewed as guarantors of the social order. To be released in September 2009.

Finian's Pub looks like a fun place to go in Jackson, MS. An article in the Jackson Free Press indicated they were hosting as Samhain ("sow-in") event. It would feature music from the Bailey Brothers and a costume contest with cash prizes. What really interested me were the Drink specials all night--Druid's Fire, Morrigan's Kiss and Blood Beer. I wonder if I can get their recipies... Certainly, the idea of "Morrigan's Kiss" scares me. Definately a place on my list to try when I'm near Jackson.

Glastonbury Weather

Several publications, including the Evening Leader and Yahoo Music (UK & Ireland) ran articles about Druids praying for sunshine for the Glastonbury (music) Festival. It appears that the so-called "Archdruid King" Arthur Pendragon led revelers in London's Hyde Park in a plea for sunshine the week beforehand at the first annual NME Glastonbury Sun Dance. Weather working must be different in the UK than it is in the US. I don't think I've ever considered weather working from over a hundred miles downwind. Maybe it is all about reveling than anything else.

Winter Solstice at Stonehenge Aotearoa

The Wairarapa Time-Age had an interesting article about the Winter Solstice being celebrated at Stonehenge Aotearoa. Of course that piqued my interest. I had heard of Stonehenge Aotearoa but really didn't know much about it. Well, the photographs are awesome. It appears that the OBOD folks put on a Winter Solstice (June 21st in the Southern Hemisphere) celebration. Their special events page shows they've hosted Wiccan and other special events. It looks like a site well worth visiting. If you ever get close to that part of the world, be sure to visit the site. It has made my list of places to see.

Stonehenge Decoded

The National Geographic folks focused upon Stonehenge in June. The magazine ran an excellent article "If the Stones could speak" in its June edition. Additionally, the television station ran a program, "Stonehenge Decoded." The TV program was good, although it took some literary license. For example, they indicated that the site was sacred and that individuals that went onto the site in Paleolithic times would get into trouble for doing so, even when following a hunt. No evidence of that, but it made for a great diversion. The bottom line is the show promotes a new theory that identifies Stonehenge as a family burial site for a limited number of important people. Besides the tv show and the magizine article there is a web site that is is a lot of fun. There are video's including reenactment and photos galore. Photos include predawn at Summer Solstice and lots of screen savers. There is a quiz, that even I, who thinks he knows quite a bit about Stonehenge, didn't ace. There is even a game that is quite fun. All-in all the focus on Stonehenge is wonderful and refreshing.

Eolas: Wisdom of the Oaks - Imbolc 2008

The third edition (Imbolc 2008) of Eolas, Wisdom of the Oaks is now available for download from the Druid Order of WhiteOak - Ord na Darach Gile website. This issue includes an interesting article outlining the mythological stories, some of the archaeological findings, and modern folklore regarding the solstices by Sean Harbaugh. For the Bard, Ann Heymann has a wonderful article about Brigid (Brigit), Imbolc, and the Gaelic Harp. I had heard of the "Ceremony of Raising" and it was great to have the several etymologies of Imbolc in one place. She goes further into a brief explanation of a tripartite cosmology of music; laments, dance tunes, and lullabies. Facinating. I'm hoping she will be able to present more in the future. There was also poetry, recipes, and reviews to round out the edition. Nicely done. Well worth checking out.

The Henge Builders

Archaeology Magazine, in the January/February issue had a wonderful article about "The Henge Builders: New Discoveries inspire archaeologists to re-envision the culture that created Stonehenge." The seven page article in the magazine is much more thorough than short, 1 page, extract on the Archaeology web site.

Among the many new findings are:

1. Bones near Stonehenge reveal that people were immigrating to the area from the European continent.

2. New carbon-14 dates indicate that Stonehenge is 1,000 years older than archaeologists previously believed.

3. A wooden henge nearby, at Durrington Walls, has lead to a contorversial idea that wood henges were associated with rituals for the living while Stonehenge was associated with rituals for the dead.

4. That the winter solstice alignment of the stones may have been more significant than the summer solstice alignment.

I must add that the author, Mike Pitts, takes some license in stating that the "view [of Stonehenge] has changed little since Hawthorne's time," [150 years ago] in that the stones were rebuilt re-erected and otherwise improved in early 20th century and again in the '50's and again in 1964. Photos of Stonehenge from before the 'Heritage Restoration" are a bit different. He even mentions the problems he had doing research 30 years ago because the intermittent excavations at the site went largely unpublished, so I'm surprised he thought there was little changed in the past 150 years.

Archaeology Magazine, January/February included an article about the Top 10 Discoveries of 2007. Among those discoveries, was Lismullin Henge, Tara, Ireland.

Within the articles, they talk about the discovery of the massive, 260 foot Lismullin Henge discovered just over a mile from Tara. This find confirmed the long-held belief that the area around the Henge contains a 'rich complex of monuments."

They also mention construction of the M3 highway which threatens not only the Hill of Tara but also the other archaeological sites in the surrounding valley. They go on to remind us of the worldwide support for the protection of the Hill of Tara, (See). There is a petition on the saveTara.com website that you can sign to show your support for saving Tara. I have long held that the Hill of Tara and its surrounding landscape are sacred as part of our ancestral heritage. There is a Save Tara Valley website and the Global Collective Arts is mobilizing with Anam Cara for Tara. I urge you to join and support any of these groups in opposing the M3.

The Terror of History

The Terror of History: Mystics, Heretics, and Witches in the Western Tradition is set of lectures by Teofilo F. Ruiz, Ph.D. of UCLA published by the Teaching Company.

In the first lecture, The Terror of History, Professor Ruiz reminds us that history is written literate elite and may not reflect the people from the lowest levels of society. He goes on to explain the "terror of history" is the response to tension and pressures of life and that there are three ways to escape the misery of human existence.
The formulation of religion and embracing of transcendental beliefs.
Embracing the material world and a life of dissipation.
Aesthetics and the pursuit of art is also used to escape the burdens of life.
For the Druid, the formulation of religion is almost a given. So many of the those along the Keltrian Druid Path have made a conscious decision to reject more traditional religions embrace their own sense of spirituality. These are typically coupled with idealistic beliefs. When armed with a strong religious belief, it is difficult not to incorporate a sense of superiority. We, as Druids, know that there are many paths to wisdom and that a sense of superiority can leadsto intolerance. And intolerance leads to the ugliest responses that humans express in their combatting the "Terror of History."

Certainly our (US) society is all about embracing the material world. Mental distraction, amusement, intemperance, drug use are all parts of a life of dissipation. We can, to a limited extent, escape the miseries of life by indulging ourselves -- "shop to you drop." But such materialism goes against the Druid's Path. We need to live with the natural world and gain wisdom from our relationships with it. Those on the Seer's path especially need to develop their relationships with the natural world; embracing the material world would be counterproductive. We, as Druids, should embrace life and not try to escape from our existence.

Aesthetics, the study of beauty, particularly as it relates to the arts is a clear part of the Druid's Path also. Developing the understanding of the principles that are used to make critical judgments concerning works of art. For the Bard, to gain an understanding of how to release emotions based upon the reactions to the beautiful and the ugly, the sublime and the comic is one of the foundations of the Bardic Path.

Professor Ruiz includes suggested reading list with each lesson and several questions to consider. The Sacred and The Profane: The Nature of Religion by Mircea Eliade jumped onto my wish list. One of professor Ruiz's questions to consider, "Why has the irrational played such a significant role in history?" will remain with me throughout the series of lectures in hopes that it will be answered.

EOLAS: Wisdom of the Oaks

The inaugural edition (Lughnasadh 2007) of a new Druid magazine, EOLAS: Wisdom of the Oaks, is now available on the Druid Order of WhiteOak - Ord na Darach Gile website.

Eolas plans to "cover a range of subjects, from stories and poetry to art work, reviews, articles and even the odd recipe or two."

Their first edition included a story about truth, some poetry, receipies, the consecration of a sacred well using a mix of traditions (Guardians of the Watchtowers, powers of the elements, nine healing herbs, and invocations to Brighid and Belenos), general information about their church and land endeavours, and finally the start of a series about being "A Druid in Iraq".

All in all it is a good start we'll keep an eye on it.

Last June, The (Portsmouth) News reported that the Insular Order of Druids archdruid, Debbie King, was arrested and had her ritual bladce confiscated after checking it with security at a courthouse. Now, according to The (Portsmouth) News, she finally received her athame back. Excellent.

The UK has tight laws regarding carrying weapons. Here in the United States, every state and many municipalities have laws regarding knives and other weapons. In many cases single-edged knives are handled differently from double-edged blades. In order to avoid problems, it is extremely important to be careful whenever carrying any form of ritual tool. Know what the laws are in your state or city. Sickles are generally not quite so restricted, however swords (as in a representation of the Sword of Nuada) and spears (as in a representation of the Spear of Lugh) are often tightly controlled. Transporting them or using them in public venues can result in confiscation or even arrest.

The idea that one should not accept compensation for religious work has long been a regular tenet of many Neopagan paths, including some Druids. In this particular case, it appears Morgan believed that she was discriminated against based upon religious discrimination while the judge ruled that it was age discrimination.

Because she was harmed, she should have accepted the money. To not do so allowed the offenders to have less of a penalty for their actions. Had the discrimination been based upon religion, she should have the money donated on her behalf to an appropriate non-profit Druid organization.

I received the Spring/Summer 2007 Catalog of the Inner Traditions/Bear & Company.

Nothing of particular interest to Druids except possibly several Masonic books including Isaac Newton's Freemasonry and The Secret Message of Jules Verne.

However, for Bard's The Triumph of the Sea Gods: The War Against the Goddess Hidden in Homer’s Tales, by Steven Sora is of particular interest. It promises to compellingly argue that "Homer’s tales are adaptations of Celtic myths that took place off the Iberian Peninsula around 1200 B.C." I'll add this one to my I'd like to read list.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State reported that Supreme Court Upheld Prisoners' Religious Freedom:

A unanimous Supreme Court ruling reaffirmed religious liberty.

The court upheld the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA), a federal law that prohibits government from limiting prisoners' religious freedom without first showing a compelling reason.

The lawsuit was brought by adherents of nonmainstream religions: the
Satanist, Wicca, and Asatru religions, and the Church of
Jesus Christ Christian who claimed the Ohio prison system failed to accomodate free exercise of religion.

We have had problems with several state prisons not delivering Druidic materials to inmates.

I really enjoyed the original Star Wars, and liked the second and third installments. I didn't care for the fourth and fifth installments for many reasons. I was looking forward to seeing the final installment (Episode III) Revenge of the Sith but now I read , in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that there is a Separatist druid army that nspires the war-weary Senate to hand over its power to a dictator. Great. A Druid Army sounds like an oxymoron to me. I was looking forward to seeing the movie, but now.... Sigh. I guess I'll wait for it to come out on video.

The News & Star published an opinion regarding the upcoming election in Carlisle (UK) that "Careful scrutiny of election pamphlets will be needed, in order to eliminate those with a tendency towards the occult, citing membership of extreme religious cults or witches’ covens and attending Druid ceremonies."

Druid Temple in San Francisco

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the SF Girls Chorus was close to having a home at 44 Page Street. The building, nearly 100 years old was originally built as a druid temple. It apparently still has some charming architectual traces of its past including Greek column capitals and a sculpted goddess head here and there.
A quick look across the internet failed to find any photos of or from the building. Any Druid's in the San Francisco area want to take some photos? I'd be very interested in seeing details from the building.

Thieves steal statue from (OBOD) Druid Grove

The Contra Costa Times reported that thieves removed a carving from a Druid Grove (Grove of Mannan mac Lir) in Walnut Creek, CA. The report indicated that although the 100 pound statue was taken, the local authorities did not consider it to be a hate crime.

I was very pleased to see that the article did not ridicule or otherwise belittle Druids, their beliefs or their practices.

Grove of Mannan mac Lir is an OBOD Grove and has a web site.

Saw an article "Visit a Welsh pub and make new friends" by Roger Godlightly in the IOL News (South Africa) that was promoting visits to Wales (March 04 2005).

The article mentions that there's a Dial-A-Druid chatline in Wales. I couldn't find an E-Mail address for Mr. Godlightly and I 've tried contacting VisitBritain and see if they know about the number. Anyone know the number or what type of "help in life" they provide?

Ancient Druid Altar for Druid Sacrifices?

The Juicee News Daily had an article about "Haunted Places in the United Kingdom."

The article talks about the Chislehurst Caves as "a labyrinth of dark, eerie mysterious passageways which have been hewn by hand from the chalk, deep beneath Chislehurst. There are over 20 miles of caverns and passageways, dug over a period of 8000 years. The vast complex of caves are a maze of ancient mines originally carved out in the search for flint and chalk. They are divided into three main sections, Saxon, Druid and Roman. Each section was later connected by digging joining passages. There is a haunted pond deep within the caves, the legend goes that a white lady appears and floats across the water. For many years there was a reward for anyone who could spend the night alone down in the caves, to date there have been some unsuccessful attempts, but so far nobody has been able to do it.. There is also an ancient Druid altar where sacrifices were carried out in the Druid section of the caverns."

It certainly looks like a place I'd like to add to my itinerary when I travel to the London area. Their website doesn't appear to have any photos of the alleged altar though. I haven't seen any clear evidence that ancient Druids actually performed sacrifices. I wonder what evidence they have....

Cedar Grove Druid Fellowship member presents paper.

Saw an article in The Western Front Online that indicated that Western students to attend United Nations conference:

"[Kipp] Trembley is a member of the Cedar Grove Druid Fellowship in Bellingham. He said Pagan Druidry is an earth-based faith and the fellowship focuses on services through eco-ministry, or environmental projects.
Trembley said he wrote his paper for the conference on a Druidic perspective of community. As a Druid facing judgment from many people, Trembley said he has a vested interest in communication. He said he is looking forward to discussing many aspects of religion and culture at the conference."

It is always good to see positive press for Druid groups. The group's web site indicates that they were established in 2003. Although they call themselves "A Druid Fellowship", they don't appear to be affiliated with ADF.

The News Letter, the Pride of Northern Ireland has an interesting article, "Pooling Together The Mystical Past And Modern Fashion Taste"

"Maureen McCullagh, 32, has been inspired to produce hand-crafted jewellery through her own interest in an ancient druid ritual involving gazing pools which druids used to tell the future. Maureen's company is named Gazing Pool Design, taking inspiration from the concept."

She has a brochure and some interesting concept in Jewelry making. The web site she has on her brochure doesn't appear to work.
